Sewing Seeds for Hope:

Handicraft Sale to support Afghan women artisans

Hansi Dean and Rosie Iacono of St. Peter’s Church will be joining us during fellowship hour on Sunday, April 30 to sell handicraft items made by Afghan women artisans. Hansi and Rosie volunteer with a group working with Afghan refugees in Manchester, NH. The group recently started a business, Sewing Seeds for Hope, to empower Afghan women who are expert seamstresses.  The sale will feature pillows, aprons, cosmetic bags, scrunchies, baby quilts, and more.

The Afghan families in Manchester are working hard to attain self-sufficiency. Most dads make little more than minimum wage in factory jobs and rents are as much as 78% of their take-home pay. Giving moms the opportunity to supplement their family’s income with the proceeds from handicraft sales is an enormous help to achieving self-sufficiency. It is also a tremendous source of pride, as they now call themselves businesswomen!

The volunteer group is also conducting a sewing supplies drive for Sewing Seeds for Hope. Using donated materials ensures that all proceeds from sales go directly to the Afghan women.

They need the following items:

  • cotton duck and upholstery fabric
  • sewing machine needles
  • cutting mats and rotary cutters
  • ribbon and zippers
  • gift cards to JoAnn Fabric and Wal-Mart

Items can be dropped off at St. Peter’s Church, 320 Boston Post Rd., during normal office hours (Monday – Thursday: 9 am – 2 pm; Friday: 9 am – 1 pm).

Please contact Hansi Dean at hansidean@aol.com if you would like items picked up, or if you are interested in volunteer opportunities. Thank you for helping Afghan women artisans launch their business.
