Learn more about Partakers “College Behind Bars” Mentoring on Sept. 14th
August 15, 2025
An invitation from Nancy Piedra, First Parish member & volunteer:
Join us during worship on Sunday, September 14, to learn about Partakers, a remarkable organization that supports the education and personal growth of incarcerated individuals.
Through its “College Behind Bars” program, in partnership with Emerson College, incarcerated students pursue a rigorous four-year curriculum leading to a bachelor’s degree. First Parish was one of the earliest supporters of Partakers, and several of our members have served as mentors. Many have found it to be a deeply meaningful and rewarding experience.
The program’s success depends on volunteers, and mentors are especially needed for the incoming fall class. As a current mentor myself, I encourage you to consider this opportunity. With so much happening in the world, it’s easy to forget those behind bars—but they need and deserve our support.
The time commitment is manageable. Each mentoring team consists of four people who visit the prison in rotation—just once every other month. In between visits, we communicate with our mentee through the prison’s secure email system. Along the way, you’ll not only develop a supportive relationship with your mentee but also build strong connections with your fellow mentors—many of whom are members of our own church.
Come hear more about the program and how you can get involved.
The Partakers Mentoring Program is just one of our active social justice projects.
